Job Summary

This position provides administrative support for facilitating media coverage of the House by the periodical press. Work includes providing administrative assistance to the director and other Gallery staff. Work also includes delivering a variety of services to members of Congress and their staff. Work is performed under the supervision of the Gallery Director and Deputy Director, respectively.

Major Duties:

• Assists in coordinating logistics for media events such as Congressional hearings, press conferences, meetings, briefings, State of the Union addresses, joint sessions, quadrennial political conventions and inaugurals and other special events.

• Assists with issuing press credentials and administers work space for Congressional correspondents.

• Assists with reviewing membership applications; processes membership dues and maintains membership data files.

• Disseminates information to periodical correspondents, Members, and staff.

• Answers phones and serves as receptionist for the Gallery.

• Responds to inquires concerning legislative and public affairs and House policies and procedures.

• Assists with updating Gallery website.
 

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, public relations or a related field.

• One to three years of news media experience or Capitol Hill experience.

• Knowledge of congressional procedure and process.

• Ability to handle competing interests, personalities and various responsibilities simultaneously with a high degree of professionalism.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Willingness to work the long and irregular hours of the House, including evenings and weekends when required.

• Competent in operation of computers and various programs.

• Self-starter with the ability to work independently with minimum supervision.

• Requires frequent and fast-paced walking throughout the Capitol Complex and campus. Must be able to endure long periods of standing.
